versatile performer, Ms. Nelson is also active in both the new and early music scenes. She often collaborates with composers to premiere new works, with recent featured appearances at the Music Today Festival, with the Eugene Contemporary Chamber Ensemble (ECCE), and a recital of vocal works by composer William Whitley. A regular soloist with the early music ensemble Vox Resonat from 2011-2015, Ms. Nelson has also appeared with the Oregon Bach Collegium and Jefferson Baroque Orchestra. Recently she collaborated with Northwest Baroque in Seattle on a concert of French baroque cantatas and airs featuring Michel Pignolet de Monteclair’s Ariane et Bacchus and selections from André Campra’s L’Avenir.
Ms. Nelson holds a doctorate in vocal performance and arts administration from the University of Oregon where she studied with Milagro Vargas. She is currently on the voice faculty at Seattle Pacific University, where she teaches applied voice, group voice, and directs the vocal jazz ensemble. Upcoming performances include a recital with pianist Diane Baxter featuring From the Diary of Virginia Woolf by Dominick Argento and I Hate Music and La Bonne Cusine by Leonard Bernstein, and an early music chamber concert with SPU
SPP, Odessa Music Academy, Odessa, Ukraine; MFA, UC-Irvine; DMA, University of Washington. Yuliya Minina is a Ukrainian-born pianist, teacher, soloist, and collaborative performer. She started her music education at the age of five in Odessa, Ukraine, where she graduated from the Odessa Music Academy. She moved to the United States to study in the master’s of fine arts program at the University of California, Irvine, and later completed her doctorate in music arts at the University of Washington. Her teachers include Craig Sheppard (University of Washington), Nina Skolnik (University of California, Irvine), Tatiana Shevchenko (Odessa Music Academy), and Eleonora Levinzon (Stolyarsky School).
Dr. Minina works as an adjunct piano faculty and a staff accompanist at Seattle Pacific, as well as a piano instructor at her home studio. She has conducted master classes at the University of Missouri, Columbia, and at Centro de Artes Musicales in Tijuana, Mexico. She has worked as a pianist at Northwest Opera in Schools, an opera outreach organization. She was also a rehearsal pianist for the Seattle Gilbert and Sullivan Society.
Dr. Minina is an active performer. She has played solo and with chamber groups in the Ukraine, Czech Republic, Mexico, and the United States. Dr. Minina has recently toured with Baja California Orchestra and performed as a soloist with Philharmonia Northwest. She and a Mexican-Ukrainian cellist, Zhenia (Jenia) Kobylyanska, have formed a piano-cello duo, giving recitals in Seattle and in Tijuana and Monterrey (Mexico).
A full one-week workshop culminating in a semi-staged performance of scenes and songs from various operas and Broadway musicals. Students will spend each day studying vocal technique, repertoire, diction, languages, movement, staging, and character work. This workshop is designed as a pre-college program instructing students at a pre-professional level. Family and friends are invited to attend the performance on the final day of the workshop.
